Esapekka Lappi raced a private team Skoda Fabia R5 in this year’s legendary Monte Carlo rally. As Lappi started carefully, the gap to race leaders was quite big in the beginning of the event. Lappi was 10th after Thursday and 9th at the end of day two, but had climbed all the way to number three on Saturday.
Lappi picked up pace even more on the last day and finished second in his class. In overall standings, Esapekka Lappi and his co-driver Janne Ferm were delightfully on the 9th position.
“I’ve got to be happy with the result. Everything went according to our plan, from tyre choices to pace notes. Me and Janne felt really good the whole weekend. And we stuck to the plan to take it safe in the beginning, despite being all the way down to 9th place in our class on Friday”, says Lappi.
“On Saturday I noticed that we will have to push a bit to make it to the podium. So we drove a little faster, but managed to stay out of trouble. It was really cool to see that everything worked in our favor in the end”, Lappi says with a grin.
Lappi did not race for WRC2 championship points in Monte Carlo. He will start chasing those points in February, driving his factory team Skoda in Rally Sweden.
